It was on 2nd January 1849, that an enterprising 17-year-old Pol Roger made his first wine sale; 175 years later, the same family operate the House and winery.
We are delighted to invite you to this special masterclass to celebrate 175 years of Pol Roger. We will be tasting eight Champagnes, from the Pol Roger White Foil NV to the famed Sir Winston Churchill Cuvee. Hosted by Fortnum’s Wine Concierge together with Martin Heidsieck – 6th Generation Pol Roger – and limited to 40 seats, this is an event not to miss. Each Champagne will be paired with small plates and nibbles.
Through wars, riots and change, Pol Roger has stuck resolutely to its roots: the production of outstanding Champagne, independence, and family ownership. The family has long been sewn into the fabric of Epernay and, indeed, Champagne. As the brand has grown, reaching all four corners of the world, the family continue to live and work in Epernay, currently owning 92 hectares in prime sites across the Vallée de la Marne, Montagne de Reims and Côte des Blancs
Slow, cool fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks, with each variety and village kept separate until final blending. Secondary fermentation takes place in the famously deep Pol Roger cellars and all bottles undergo remuage (riddling) by hand, a rarity in Champagne these days. The cellars run for 9.5km and the deepest, known as the ‘cave de prise de mousse’, is at 34m below street level where the temperature is 9°C or less, thus prolonging fermentation and contributing to the unmistakable quality and style of the wines and their famously fine bubbles.
