About ‘A Savage Kingdom’
Artist and print designer Sabina Savage creates her own visual world informed by nature, myth and history. A Savage Kingdom is the first publication on Sabina’s eponymous brand, marking its tenth anniversary, and presents her exquisite hand-drawn illustrations alongside the silk and cashmere scarves on which they are printed.
Grouped by collection, the book guides readers through the myriad symbols and references in Sabina’s work, from stories of Tipu Sultan, the 18th-century ruler of Mysore to Victorian zoological and botanical illustrators, from Japanese Noh theatre of the Edo period to the royal beasts – including ostriches, elephants and grizzly and polar bears – who were housed at the Tower of London’s Menagerie from the 1200s. Writer Zoë Lescaze introduces the publication, discussing Sabina’s development as an artist and the tensions between humans and other animals at play in her designs.
A Savage Kingdom is for people familiar with the brand and newcomers alike, interested in drawing, craftsmanship and fantastic tales.
