Pearls have fascinated humankind for centuries. Coveted since ancient times, and revered for their purity and natural beauty, they have adorned emperors, queens, and artists alike.
However, few people know that from the late 19th to the mid-20th century, pearls played a central role in an intense trade between the Gulf and France. Even fewer remember that pearls were once at the heart of the luxury industry and Parisian culture.
From 21 November 2024 to 01 June 2025, L’ÉCOLE, School of Jewelry Arts presents Paris, City of Pearls, an exhibition dedicated to this forgotten history.
A Journey Through the History of Pearls
The exhibition begins with a gemological introduction, exploring the origins of pearls. Visitors will learn about their formation, rarity, and significance in jewellery.
For decades, pearls were Paris’s ultimate symbol of elegance and refinement. The exhibition traces the passion of jewellers for pearls, the shaping of the jewellery industry and the rise of major Parisian jewellery houses from the late 19th century to the present day.
Through exquisite jewellery, historical documents, and expert insights, Paris, City of Pearls brings a lost chapter of luxury and craftsmanship back to life.
